A Mantra for Schadenfreude
The Morning Mantra is available on iTunes, Overcast, Stitcher, Youtube, Soundcloud, Spotify, Youtube and pretty much anywhere podcasts can be found. Transcripts forthcoming on the blog at www.coachedandloved.com
Everyone thinks I’m overdramatic when I’m stressed. Sometimes I think they are right. Then, i remember an octopus is stressed, it eats itself. PERSPECTIVE! I’m doing GREAT!
Hi! This is Coach MK and THIS is the Morning Mantra.

Hi, my name is MK Fleming. I'm a run coach based in Denver, Colorado. But this isn't a podcast about running, exactly. Don't tell my clients, but *whispers* we're never really talking about the running. When you know a crap-tastic event is coming it helps to have a mantra to keep you centered and focused as you move through it. You don't have to be an athlete to be hashtag #coachedandloved by coach MK. And if you are here, then you are hashtag #winningatlife.
Today’s Mantra Is: I got It
Mercury is in retrograde, but if you were to ask me it feels like Mercury is in What the Fuck. It’s been one hell of a week you guys! Today’s calmness is brought to you by Lexapro.
These are the moments, as a parent, I wait for some a-hole to GLEEFULLY tell me, “HA! Careful what you ask for!”
I don’t understand that instinct, to take joy in someone else’s suffering. Especially suffering I recognize and share. I see people hurting and I want to help, so those little public jabs can be really painful. I want to tell whoever caused me that pain, to eff off. I”m neither shy bor subtle, this wouldn’t be a stretch for me to do. I’ve seen a lot of pain in my life, and I don’t enjoy seeing other people struggle. it is easy to feel angry and shamed when someone enjoys our pain, but what I’m about to propose is harder: lean into it.
YES, I asked for 4 children.
YES, I asked to start my own business.
YES, I chose all of this. It’s all mine.
YES, I thought carefully, I chose carefully, and I own this. It’s exactly what I asked for. The good AND the bad, because I’m sentient.
That’s when I stop, smile, stand a little taller, look at the gleeful stranger and say, “I got it.” And I do. Especially on days that start with Lexapro. It doesn’t make me weak, it makes me strong enough to resist biting the hook.
So, the Mantra: When someone laughs at your struggle rather than offer a helping hand, take a second to think about everything you have, so much that your arms are breaking, so much that you are dropping things even metaphorical balls, and remember how easy it is to judge strangers when you have nothing to hold yourself. Hear my voice in the back of your head saying, “I GOT IT!” Then smile, and carry on. We got this.
