Hi, my name is MK Fleming. I'm a run coach based in Denver, Colorado. But this isn't a podcast about running, exactly. Don't tell my clients, but *whispers* we're never really talking about the running. When you know a crap-tastic event is coming it helps to have a mantra to keep you centered and focused as you move through it. You don't have to be an athlete to be hashtag #coachedandloved by coach MK. And if you are here, then you are hashtag #winningatlife.

Today’s Mantra is: Station 10 (The Global Pandemic Mantra)

One of my favorite novels is Station 11 by Emily St. John Mandel, which takes place in the Great Lakes after a fictional swine flu pandemic dubbed the "Georgia Flu" has killed most of the world's population. The book is beautifully written, and though its depiction of a post-civilization world is bleak, it’s also incredibly full of hope. The bleak parts remind us to appreciate the parts of civilization that we take for granted each day- running water, electricity, restaurants, movies and drugs, while reminding us of the best parts of humanity that built these things in the first place- creativity, resilience, unshakable visions of the future, and love- still exist. These aspects of humanity are too strong to be eradicated.

Now, if you need a book right now, if you feel anxious don’t grab Station 11. Try Election by Tom Perotta, or Teddy Bear Picnic.

Mr. Rogers told us that when he was little, his mother would tell him to look for the helpers, that when things are scary, you’ll always find people who are helping. A lot of us are scared right now, and the word ‘pandemic’ is scary for sure. In those moments when you feel overwhelmed, hear my voice in the back of your head saying, “HEY! WE’re at Station 10.” and we are. This is not nuclear fallout. The air is still safe to breathe. The global food chain is not currently threatened. And the best parts of humanity, the parts that built everything we love, have not been eradicated.
